Squarespace
SaaS · Design-first · Brand & portfolio favourite
Squarespace built its reputation on premium templates and a tight, consistent visual system. In 2026 it has matured into a full small-business platform — bookings via Acuity, email marketing, member sites and a respectable native e-commerce stack.

What Squarespace is for
If Wix's identity is "easiest to use," Squarespace's identity is "easiest to look good." Every template ships with a coherent type, colour and spacing system, and the editor restricts you just enough that even non-designers ship a site that does not look like it was assembled from clip art.
That makes it the natural home for brand sites, creator portfolios, restaurants, hotels, photographers, boutique e-commerce and any small business where appearance is part of the product. Member Areas, Acuity Scheduling, Squarespace Email Campaigns and Unfold (social) round it out into a creator-economy bundle.
The Fluid Engine editor (the replacement for the older grid-based system) brought modern responsive controls and meaningful flexibility without sacrificing the "everything stays inside the design system" guarantee.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Best-in-class design system — sites look professional with minimal effort.
- Strong native e-commerce, including subscriptions and digital products.
- Acuity Scheduling included on most paid plans.
- Member Areas for paid content without extra plugins.
- Clean, semantic HTML — solid Lighthouse scores out of the box.
Cons
- Smaller integration ecosystem than Wix or WordPress.
- No source export — full platform lock-in.
- 3% transaction fee on the Business plan can sting at scale.
- Customisation has limits — power users hit walls Webflow does not impose.
- Multilingual still requires workarounds; not a first-class feature.
Tech architecture
Squarespace runs on its own proprietary cloud, with sites served from a global CDN. Pages output relatively clean HTML and CSS by default, which is part of why Lighthouse scores tend to be respectable without manual tuning.
The Developer Platform (Git-based custom templating) was deprecated for new sites, so today every Squarespace site lives inside Fluid Engine + Code Injection + Squarespace Extensions. Powerful enough for 95% of small business sites, but not a platform for headless / custom front-end work.
Best for
- Brand sites and portfolios where look-and-feel matters most
- Photographers, designers and creators selling courses or prints
- Restaurants, hotels and boutique services needing bookings + a site
- Small e-commerce stores (under ~$200k/yr)
Skip if
You need source export, a serious multilingual setup, complex headless integrations, or you want to host on infrastructure you control.
FAQ
Is Squarespace better than Wix?
For brand-driven and design-conscious sites, yes. For users who want absolute control over every pixel or need Wix Stores' specific features, Wix is more flexible. They land in roughly the same price bracket.
Does Squarespace support real e-commerce?
Yes — Squarespace Commerce supports physical goods, digital downloads, subscriptions, gift cards and abandoned-cart recovery on its Advanced plan. For stores doing more than ~$200k/yr or needing deep app ecosystems, Shopify remains a better fit.
Can I export a Squarespace site?
You can export blog posts (XML) and basic page content, but the visual design and most components do not transfer. Plan to stay on Squarespace if you commit to it.
How does Squarespace's SEO compare?
Out of the box it performs well: clean HTML, automatic sitemaps, structured data on commerce pages and proper canonical handling. WordPress with a serious SEO plugin still has a higher ceiling for technical SEO.
